One of the major deterrents that people face when launching a catering business is that their market is already over saturated with competition. Here are a couple solutions that will allow you to take an edge and stand out from the masses.
Set the Trends
Dare to be different. Have the courage to view yourself as a pioneer of whatever it is that you’re doing. This is probably one of the most important things I’ve learned in my career thus far. What are you doing that is unique to the market? What do you offer that the other catering companies or restaurants don’t? Maybe it is the overall experience, maybe it’s your diverse ingredients, or maybe it’s the flexibility of the places or events that you cater to. Whatever the case may be, raise the bar. You will be seen as the top competitor in your market.
Pay Attention to Different Markets
Look for the underserved or overlooked markets. Maybe you are a little late coming into the game, or maybe there is already a “trendsetter” in your particular market. That doesn’t mean you’re counted out. It means you need to find the missing piece that the others haven’t reached yet! There is opportunity in simplicity. A salad delivery company that I helped start revolved around the concept of anticipating customers’ orders before they even ordered them. In other words, they already knew people were going to leave their offices to get salads for lunch. So we started making salads, and bringing them to the desks of these people for about the same price as they would pay if they went out! We hit an underserved market.
It may sound cliche, but if you can dream it, you can do it. Anything is possible if you believe in your idea and have the determination to make it successful!
